Participating businesses only need to install a hotspot that meets the criteria listed below. If you don't know how to do this, there are several local IT businesses that can install one for you at a relatively low cost. If you are running your business using the same internet connection, it is recommended that you speak to your IT support provider about issues that protect your business operations. Freespot participants must meet a few simple criteria:
- They must have an 802.11 compliant wireless access point or router connected to the internet, with a minimum bandwidth of 1 Mbps.
- The use of keys, passwords, or agreement pages requiring acceptance etc. may not be employed as they are a barrier to immediate wireless access (this is especially important for smartphone usage such as iPhones and BlackBerry). A user fee may also not be charged to the public for its use.
- The Service Set Identifier or SSID (your hotspot's name) should be set to freespot - LocationName.
- The window sticker, or other medium of displaying the freespots logo, should be prominently displayed at the participant's place of business. As well, versions of the freespots logo are available for download and use in corporate promotions, web site display, and in store displays.
If you have complied with this standard, please register your freespot!
If I build it, will they come?
They will if they know about it! Take advantage of every opportunity to promote your free Wireless Internet access.
- Display the freespots logo prominently so everyone can see it.
- Put it on your menus or other material your customers see and read.
- Use it in your advertising.
- Make sure that local businesses know about your freespot. Office workers bring their laptops for meetings.
- Train your employees to mention to customers that you offer Freespot access.
